BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The UAB men's soccer team will kick off the 11th annual Soccer for a Cure Classic on Friday night when it takes on Fairleigh Dickinson. Kickoff between the Blazers and the unbeaten Knights is slated for 7 p.m. at BBVA Compass Field.
Started by Charlie Corbitt, Soccer for a Cure is a three-day event that aims to raise money for Children's of Alabama. Teams will play a match on Friday and another on Sunday, with a trip to the hospital for autographs and pictures on Saturday.
UAB enters Friday's contest coming off of a 2-1 overtime victory at Santa Clara on Sunday, Aug. 26. Eder Mora's first career goal lifted the Blazers to their first extra time road win since 2006.
Mora, Louis-Etienne Nzonza and Aidan O'Hara have each found the back of the net for the Blazers thus far and each lead the team with a pair of points.
Fairleigh Dickinson comes to Birmingham looking to remain unbeaten as it is 1-0-1 on the season, including a win against Army on Tuesday night.
Ahu Obhakhan leads the Knights as he is responsible for all three of their goals this season. Obhakhan earned Northeast Conference Offensive Player of the Week honors after his efforts over the previous week.
UAB is 0-0-1 all-time against the Knights with the lone meeting coming on Sept. 14, 2012 at West Campus Field when the two squads battled to a 2-2 tie.
Memphis takes on Coastal Carolina at 4:30 p.m. on Friday to begin the tournament. The teams will take their annual visit to Children's of Alabama on Saturday, followed by the conclusion of play on Sunday where Memphis takes on Fairleigh Dickinson at 11 a.m. and UAB hosts Coastal Carolina at 1:30 p.m. All games will be played at UAB's BBVA Compass Field.
Live stats will be provided for all four of the tournament games, while a live stream will only accompany UAB's matches.
During halftime of the Blazers' match on Friday, fans will have the opportunity to participate in Launch a Ball. Contestants donate money for a chance to toss tennis balls into targets on the field to earn prizes. All money donated will go back to the Soccer for a Cure fund.
Sunday is First Responders Day at BBVA Compass Field. All first responders with a valid ID will receive free admission into both matches.
With a purchase of a ticket to the first game on each day, it will grant access to both contests. Games are approximately 30 minutes apart. Tickets are available at the BBVA Compass Field Ticket Office or online and are $5 for adults and $3 for kids 18 and under.
Fans can receive access to every home men's soccer, women's soccer, volleyball, women's basketball, baseball and softball game for the entire 2018-19 season by purchasing a Gold Card. Visit the UAB Ticket Office website, or contact them at (205) 975-UAB1, for more details.
