BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The UAB men's soccer team begins its 40th season of soccer on Friday night when it opens the campaign at the University of the Pacific. The Blazers and Tigers are slated to kickoff at 9:30 p.m. CST.
UAB is 22-14-3 all-time in the opening match of the season, with 17 of those wins have come during head coach Mike Getman's tenure.
Preseason All-Conference USA defender Mathieu Laurent will anchor UAB's backline a year after he was named Second Team All-Conference. As a junior he helped UAB to four shutouts to four shutouts, while also netting a pair of goals.
Freshman midfielder Blake White found the back of the net in UAB's exhibition match on August 18 against Mercer. The Atlanta native had a stellar club soccer campaign as he helped the Atlanta United Futbol Club development team to a 2016 national title.
Pacific is coming off of a 13-4-2 season in 2017 that included a trip to the second round of the NCAA Tournament before falling to eventual champion Stanford. The Tigers were picked third in the 2018 Preseason West Coast Conference poll.
This season, the Tigers return 16 players from last year's team, including preseason All-WCC performers Camden Riley, Wouter Verstraaten and Tariq Branche.
UAB and Pacific have no previous history together as the Tigers are the only team on UAB's schedule this season that the Blazers have never faced.
Fans in the Stockton area can free receive admission to Knowles Field.
The Blazers wrap up the West Coast swing on Sunday when they face Santa Clara at 9:30 p.m. CST.
Fans can receive admission to every home men's soccer, women's soccer, women's basketball, volleyball, baseball and softball game for the entire 2018-19 season by purchasing a Gold Card. Contact the UAB Ticket Office, (205) 975-UAB1, or visit their website for more details.
