BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Despite holding the Bears scoreless in the second half, the UAB men's soccer team fell 2-1 to the reigning Southern Conference Champions, Mercer, on Saturday night at BBVA Compass Field.
UAB falls to 0-2 in the 2018 preseason, following a loss at No. 11 Clemson on Tuesday, August 14.
"I was disappointed in the result tonight, but really pleased with the performance," head coach Mike Getman said. "I don't think we allowed a goal from the run of play, Mercer had a few shots but all were from set pieces. We still have things to work on, but overall I was really happy. The whole idea of preseason is to get ready for games that count and I thought today was a really good step forward for us."
Mercer took an early lead as it Leo Toldedo Jr. found the back of the net when he headed in a corner kick at the 3-minute mark to give the Bears a 1-0 advantage.
The Bears tacked on their second and final goal in the 24th minute when Ricardo Packer Jr. slipped a ball past UAB's James Teal to make the match 2-0.
Blake White put the Blazers on the board in the 56th minute as he rifled a ball from 30 yards out into the back of the net for the game's final goal.
Despite the loss, UAB outshot Mercer 13-to-5, while both teams had two saves each.
White and DeAndre Robinson led the Blazers with three shots each. Louis Etienne-Nzonza and Donovan Watson provided the Blazers' two other shots on goal.
UAB opens the regular season with a West Coast swing beginning Friday, August 24 at the University of the Pacific, before closing the road trip on Sunday, August 26 at Santa Clara. Both matches are slated to begin at 9:30 p.m. CST.
