BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The UAB men's soccer team wraps up its exhibition matches on Saturday night when it hosts Mercer at BBVA Compass Field. Kickoff between the Blazers and Bears is slated for 7 p.m.
UAB is coming off of a 3-0 exhibition loss at No. 11 Clemson on Tuesday night. All three of the Blazers' keepers saw time, with James Teal leading the squad with three saves.
Teal returns for the Blazers in goal for his sophomore season, where he ranked among top freshmen in the NCAA in saves, goals allowed and goals against average.
Mathieu Laurent once again will captain the backline. The Markham, Ontario native was named to the Conference Preseason All-Conference team after he anchored a backline that helped UAB to four shutouts in 2017.
Mercer enters the season looking to defend its Southern Conference title as the Bears have won it the previous three years.
The Bears return 13 players, including five starters, from a team that made a run to the NCAA Tournament a season ago. Defender Jake Mezei highlights the returners as he was a Preseason All-Southern Conference selection after an 11-point campaign as a junior that included three goals and five assists.
UAB opens the regular season at the University of the Pacific on Friday August 24. The Blazers will continue their West Coast swing as they also are slated to play at Santa Clara on August 26.
Fans can receive admission to every home men's soccer, women's soccer, women's basketball, volleyball, baseball and softball game for the entire season by purchasing a Gold Card. Contact the UAB Ticket Office (205) 975-UAB1, or visit their website for more details.
