BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The UAB bowling team made history over the past week in Dallas, Texas, after the Blazers saw some of their best-ever performances at the Junior Gold Championships.
Rising junior Taylor Russell recorded the team's top result of the tournament, finishing in a tie for ninth place overall and becoming just the second bowler in program history to advance to the top-16 in the event. Her finish marks the best by a Blazer at Junior Golds in school history.
"To have such a successful season finishing as an All-American and grasping a handful of All-Tournament Team places, placing where I did in this tournament was icing on the cake," Russell said. "It's an accomplished feeling knowing that hard work really does pay off. I gained a new confidence leaving this tournament that I've really been yearning for."
UAB began the tournament with eight bowlers in the field and saw a program-record five advance past the first cut. Jamie Krasnigor joined Russell as the only Blazers to make the second cut, finishing in 61st place overall with a 190.27 average.
Caitlin Cunningham posted the third-best finish of the Blazer contingent, finishing tied for 72nd with a 192.67 average, while Cayla Davidson (186.05) finished in 113th place and Sierra Lewis (184.48) took 118th place to round out the team's showing in the first cut.
UAB had three more competitors in the field, with Morgan Mullinax (165.94) finishing 521st, Katie Hurley (162.13) placing 607th and Hallie Herring (158.31) coming in at 679th. Overall, a total of 856 bowlers were in the field.
"I am always so proud of how the girls represent themselves and UAB when they are out at their own tournaments," head coach Michelle Crews said. "To have eight players in the field, five that made the first cut, two that made the second cut and to see Taylor make a run at the T.V. show was truly exciting. It was so hard not being there this summer watching them in person. To see all of them have such success and to do it without a coach standing behind them is a true testament to their hard work and how bright the future of UAB Bowling is. I'm excited for what is to come this season. I am so very proud of all of them."
UAB returns its entire squad from the historic 2017-18 season and will add four newcomers for the upcoming campaign. The Blazers also look forward to their first season as members of the MEAC.
