BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The UAB women's tennis team was once again recognized for its hard work off the court as it earned the Southern Region ITA Community Service Award, the national tennis organization announced on Monday.
UAB has now earned the honor in back-to-back seasons after claiming the honor after last season, which saw all nine of its student-athletes participate in a combined 177 hours of community service.
"Our team is proud to get recognized by the ITA and the universities in our region for our community service efforts," head coach Mark Tjia said. "Our team and our entire athletic department recognizes the value and benefits of giving back to the community. It is something we have placed great importance on and our student-athletes really enjoy doing it."
The Blazers volunteered at several different locations throughout Birmingham this year, including Children's of Alabama and Habitat for Humanity, among others. The group also volunteered at many different events around the UAB campus.
The numerous hours spent also saw the squad rank second amongst all Division I women's tennis programs in total community service hours in Helper Helper, the NCAA's partner in community outreach.
