OXFORD, Ala. – Playing in their final midweek game of the season, the UAB softball team shutout Jacksonville State, 4-0, on Wednesday night at Choccolocco Park.
Claire Blount (8-12) was masterful in the circle once again, tossing her 12th complete-game this season. The sophomore lefty struck out six Gamecocks without allowing a walk and now has 100 strikeouts on the year.
Jacksonville State (27-23) managed just three hits off Blount, who did not allow a runner past first base all night.
UAB (23-29-1), meanwhile, took a quick 1-0 lead in the first inning when Natalie Erwin reached on a fielder's choice and was moved to third on a single and a hit batter before Blount brought her home with a ground out to second.
Erwin extended the Blazer lead to 2-0 in the third when she reached base on a single, stole second and then went second to home on a JSU throwing error. In the fourth, Erwin hit her eighth home run of the season to straight away center field to give UAB a 3-0 lead.
With two away in the fourth the Blazers scrapped their way to another run as Ashton Clem stepped into the box and was hit by a pitch, bringing home Katelyn Prater from third to score UAB's fourth run of the game.
The Gamecocks picked up two of their three hits with a single in the fifth and a single in the sixth but never threatened.
Faith Sims (17-9) threw six innings for JSU, giving up four runs on seven hits, walking two and striking out one. Nicole Rodriguez tossed just an inning for the Gamecocks, allowing a hit and striking out one Blazer.
Erwin went 2-for-4 on the day with three runs scored, an RBI and a solo home run. Blount and Clem each picked up an RBI for UAB.
