Blazers Fall at Cross-Town Rival Samford

HOMEWOOD, Ala. – The UAB baseball team saw its two-game winning streak snapped on Tuesday night when it fell 7-5 at Samford.
Samford (25-21) took the first lead of the game in the bottom of the fourth inning after Brooks Carlson and Austin Edens led off the frame with consecutive singles before a wild pitch scored Carlson and the third Bulldog hit of the inning plated Edens to give Samford a 2-0 lead.
UAB (19-23) was able to tie the game in the top of the fifth Brett Blackwood laced a RBI double off the wall in left center to score Price Visintainer and Cole Collins and tie the game at two.
The Blazers then captured their first lead of the game Carter Pharis followed Blackwood's double with one of his own to the same spot to allow Collins and Blackwood to come around to score and give UAB a 4-2 lead.
The Bulldogs answered UAB's four runs with four of their own in the bottom of the fifth inning as four Bulldogs crossed the plate on three hits to give Samford a 6-4 lead.
The Blazers cut the game to one in the top of the seventh as Collins reached base for the fourth-time in the contest without registering an at-bat, making his way around the bases and scoring on a fielder's choice to cut the lead to 6-5.
Samford once again countered in the bottom of the seventh as it scored an insurance run on no hits, making the game 7-5.
Kyle Davis suffered his first career loss for the Blazers, while Josh Rich earned his second win of the season for Samford. The Bulldog's Wyatt Burns collected his seventh save of the season.
The Antonio Ralat and Visintainer duo, the Blazers' eight and nine hole hitters, once again led the Green and Gold offensively as they collected two hits each while Visintainer added a run scored. Ralat has had three consecutive multi-hit games, while Visintainer has had two hits in each of his last six contests.
Blackwood also finished the night with a pair of hits and two RBI for his 12th multi-hit game of the season and team-leading seventh multi-RBI contest.
The Blazers return to campus this weekend when they host No. 12 Southern Miss in a three-game series beginning Friday at 6:30 p.m. at Young Memorial Field.
