BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The UAB baseball team was unable to manufacture any offense on Friday night as it fell to No. 11 Southern Miss 6-0 at Young Memorial Field.
The Blazers were shut out for the fourth-time this season in league play.
"I thought we played really good," head coach Brian Shoop said. "We faced the conference Pitcher of the Year on a team that has the conference Player of the Year and probably the conference Player of the Year runner-up. Southern Miss is a team that many people think will host a regional and I thought we played them well. We barreled up a lot of balls. Southern Miss is just a really good team and I'm excited to take another run at them tomorrow."
Southern Miss (33-12, 17-4) struck in the first inning as the leadoff batter of the game reached on a single. Two batters later, Luke Reynolds hit a two-run shot over the right field wall to give the Golden Eagles a 2-0 lead.
Southern Miss pushed the third run of the game across the game as the Blazers committed a two-out throwing error to allow Mason Irby to score from third to extend the Golden Eagle lead to 3-0.
UAB held Southern Miss scoreless until the top of the sixth inning when Irby knocked his second single of the game before coming around to score on a wild pitch for the fourth Golden Eagle run of the game.
The Golden Eagles pushed their finals runs of the game across the plate with two outs in the top of the ninth as they scored two runs on hit with a UAB error to make the contest 6-0.
UAB (19-24, 11-11) threatened in the bottom of the ninth as Thomas Johns hit a single into left field follow by Stephen Dobb's third hit of the game, but Nick Sandlin retired the next two Blazer hitters to end the game.
Sandlin earned his seventh win of the season as he tossed his second consecutive complete game, allowing just six UAB hits with nine strikeouts and two walks.
Tanner Graham took the loss for the Blazers, his sixth of the season. The junior went 5.2 innings, allowing four runs, just three earned, on seven hits with five strikeouts.
Cole Whitman came in in relief of Graham and tossed 2.2 innings, allowing two runs on one hit while collecting a pair of strikeouts.
Dobbs led the Blazers offensively, picking up three of the Blazers' six hits for his 10th career multi-hit game.
Due to impending weather in the Birmingham area, game two has been moved up to noon on Saturday.
