HATTIESBURG, Miss. – The UAB softball team split the first two games of its conference series with Southern Miss on Saturday at the Southern Miss Softball Complex. The Blazers took Game 1, 7-3, but fell in the second game 3-2.
It was the long ball that did the damage in the opening game of the series as UAB smashed four homers on its way to the victory. Rachel Rogers hit two solo home runs while Sarah Crawford and Natalie Erwin crushed a pair of 2-run bombs.
In the fourth inning down by a run, Destini England hit a lead off double through the left side and Erwin laid down a bunt single to advance England to third. Erwin stole second and England scored on the throw to tie the game up.
Crawford stepped to the plate and smacked a 2-1 count pith up in the zone over the centerfield wall for her a 2-run homer, her second home run of the season and gave the Blazers a 3-1 lead. Rogers was up next and cranked a solo shot to left center and UAB went to the bottom of the fourth leading 4-1.
Southern Miss (15-28, 5-9 C-USA) cut into the lead in the bottom of the fourth and fifth innings, scoring a run in each to make it 4-3 UAB.
Rogers extended the Blazer lead in the top of the sixth with a monster solo home run deep over the left field wall and UAB took a 5-3 lead. In the seventh, Erwin crushed a 2-run bomb over the 220 mark in centerfield as the Blazers walked away with the 7-3 victory.
Emily Kachel (10-10) got the start and picked up the win for UAB, throwing five innings allowing three runs, two earned, on seven hits. The righty struck out two without surrendering a walk. Megan Smith came on in relief and allowed just one hit in two innings of work.
UAB (14-24-1, 6-4-1) started quick in Game 2 putting two runs on the board in the first inning. Claire Blount came to the plate with one out and the bases loaded and smoked a single through the left side of the infield and drove home England and Erwin to take the early lead.
However, the Golden Eagles answered back with two runs of their own in the bottom of the third. Southern Miss broke the tie with a run in the bottom of the fourth inning and shutdown the UAB offense the rest of the way as they took the second game 3-2.
Blount (2-12) threw six innings allowing three runs, one earned, on six hits. The sophomore didn't allow a walk while she struck out three batters.
