BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The UAB baseball team picked up its fourth consecutive victory on Friday afternoon as it claimed a 2-1 win in game one of the series against FIU at Young Memorial Field.
Tanner Graham and Carson Jones combined for the complete game five hit, one run dominant performance.
"It was a great Friday night Conference USA battle and a great win for our team," head coach Brian Shoop said.
FIU (13-17, 4-6) took a 1-0 lead in the top of the second inning with a solo home run to left field.
UAB (14-14, 6-4) answered in the bottom of the second. Carter Pharis hit a leadoff solo shot to tie the game at one.
Stephen Dobbs continued the second inning with a one-out double to right field before Antonio Ralat tallied his ninth RBI of the season to score Dobbs and give the Blazers a 2-1 lead.
The Panthers threatened in the seventh inning with a lead off single, but Graham settled in to retire the side with a ground out and two strikeouts to end the threat.
Graham finished the night throwing seven innings and allowed five hits with one earned run while striking out six batters and picked up his second win of the season. Jones threw the final two innings and was a perfect six up and six down en route to his third save of the year.
"Tanner was awesome," Shoop said. "He spent a ton of energy in the seventh when FIU got a runner to third with one out, that takes a toll on not only pitch count but also on energy because you work so hard to get out of it. Then he turned it over to Carson who went six up and six down so he was great too."
Pharis' home run in the second was his second of the season. Cole Collins, Pharis, Dobbs and Ralat all collected one hit in the contest.
"The offense answered their one run immediately and pitching and defense took it from there so it was a good win for our kids," Shoop said.
Javier Valdes of FIU went 2-for-4 and was the only batter in the game with multiple hits.
The two teams meet for the second game in the series on Saturday afternoon at Young Memorial Field with first pitch slated for 4 p.m.
UAB fans will have the opportunity to get their first look at the 2018 football team in the annual Green and Gold scrimmage scheduled for 1 p.m. at Legion Field on Saturday. Fans can then bring their football ticket stub to Young Memorial and receive free admission to the baseball game. Contact the UAB Ticket Office (205 975-UAB1) for more details.
