Offensive Display Sends UAB to Series Win at No. 22 Florida Atlantic

The win gave UAB the series, 2-1, marking the first series win against a ranked opponent on the road in program history. The Blazers have now won every road series this season.
UAB (19-22, 11-10 C-USA) struck first in the game for the third time in the series as it plated two runs in the top of the first inning. Tyler Tolbert drew a leadoff walk and came around to score when Colton Schultz laced a triple into right-center field to give the Blazers a 1-0 lead.
Carter Pharis followed Schultz with a double down the left field line to score Schultz as UAB led 2-0.
In the top of the second inning, Cole Collins led off with a single before swiping his fourth base of the season to move into scoring positon with no outs. Antonio Ralat hit a single into left field before Price Visintainer was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Tolbert doubled into left center field, scoring Collins and Ralat and making the game 4-0.
Pharis drove in Visintainer on a sacrifice to third base as the Blazers extended their lead to 5-0.
For the third time in the contest, UAB got the leadoff man aboard as Stephen Dobbs drew a walk and advanced to second on a wild pitch. Collins laid down a bunt single for his second hit of the game to move Dobbs to third before Ralat singled into centerfield for his second hit of the contest to score Dobbs and make the game 6-0.
The Blazers added four more runs on three hits in the third inning to take a commanding 10-0 lead.
Florida Atlantic (30-12-1, 14-6-1 C-USA) scored four runs on three hits in the bottom of the fourth inning to cut the game to 10-4.
The game remained 10-4 until the sixth inning when Pharis was hit by a pitch to lead off the inning. One batter later, Blackwood launched his sixth home run of the season with a two-run shot over the left field wall to score Pharis and extend the lead to 12-4.
The Owls scored the final run of the contest in the bottom of the sixth on a UAB fielding error to make the game 12-5.
Tyler Gates (4-1) earned the win on the mound for the Blazers as he went 5.1 innings and allowed five runs on five hits with three strikeouts and two walks. Ryan Wesson came in in relief in the sixth inning and closed out the game, throwing 3.2 innings of scoreless, three-hit baseball en route to earning his first career save.
Five Blazers reached the multi-hit mark, led by Tolbert, Blackwood and Ralat who finished with three hits each. Tolbert also finished the day with a career-high two doubles and four RBI.
Ralat had quite the homecoming as he went 3-for-5 with two runs scored and a RBI in the series finale. The junior recorded three hits in the last game of the series.
Jared DeSantolo led the Owls offensively as he finished with a game-high four hits.
UAB returns to Birmingham for a four-game stretch beginning Tuesday night at Samford. First pitch is set for 6 p.m. from Joe Lee Griffin Field. The Blazers then return to Young Memorial Field on Friday for a three-game series against No. 12 Southern Miss.
