BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Coming off a stellar 2017-18 campaign, sophomore Marlene Herrmann has been named to the All-Conference USA Singles Second Team, the league office announced on Friday afternoon.
This is the first All-Conference honor of Herrmann's UAB career, while the Blazers have now had at least one student-athlete garner All-Conference recognition in every season since 2013.
"I am happy for Marlene to get recognized by our conference," head coach Mark Tjia said. "She had one of the better individual seasons anyone has ever had around here and she improved steadily with each match. This is a very tough league. Two of the top-10 players in the nation are in our conference and there are far fewer spots available than in previous years. This recognition puts her in some very good company and she can be very proud of it. Hopefully next year we can have more Blazers on it."
Herrmann was the Blazers' most lethal threats in singles play this season, going 15-4 overall and 14-4 in the No. 2 position. Her on-court heroics also saw her go a perfect 4-0 in C-USA play with wins against opponents from WKU, Southern Miss, Charlotte and North Texas.
She finished this past season strong, winning 12-straight matches since February 24 to close out the year. On March 14, she was named the Conference USA Athlete of the Week for her outstanding efforts over a five-match span the week before, where she went a perfect 5-0.
"UAB has given me such an opportunity and I do my best every day to give back to make a positive impact on our team and school," Herrmann said. "It is such an honor to be named to the Second Team All-Conference and it feels good to know that the hard work is paying off. This gives me the motivation to continue to work hard to get better."
Hermann and the rest of the the team has a lot to look forward to next year as it returns their entire squad from this season.
