RUSTON, La. – Sunday's rubber match will decide who wins the series between Conference USA leaders UAB and Louisiana Tech after the Blazers and Lady Techsters split the doubleheader on Saturday at the Lady Techster Softball Complex.
UAB (20-27-1, 11-5-1 C-USA) dropped game one, 7-2, but bounced back later in the day to take game two, 4-0, and snap Louisiana Tech's 13-game winning streak. Claire Blount (5-12) pitched a gem for the Green and Gold in game two, tossing a complete-game shutout.
The Pembroke Pines, Fla. native allowed just four hits while walking four and striking out five. Blount picked up the win, her fourth in conference play, and has now racked up 90 strikeouts this season, the seventh most in Conference USA.
UAB got on the board first in game two with a two-run home run from Natalie Erwin in the top of the third inning. In the fifth, it was Erwin getting the offense going again with a leadoff single. After Analyse Petree doubled down the right field line, Louisiana Tech intentionally walked Rachel Rogers to load the bases.
Sarah Crawford made them pay with a single through the right side, scoring Erwin from third. A fly out to left field wasn't deep enough to drive in a run, but Molli Garcia hit a sacrifice fly to right, driving home Petree to extend the Blazer lead to 4-0.
From there, it was all Blount, who, along with the aid of the defense, shutdown the Lady Techsters and only let one base runner advance into scoring position the rest of the game.
In the series opener, Louisiana Tech scored first in the bottom of the third inning as Morgan Turkoly led off by getting hit by a pitch and then stole second before advancing to third on a deep fly ball and scoring on a single to right.
In the top of the fourth inning, Rogers smacked her fifth home run of the season, a two-run shot down the line in left, to give UAB a 2-1 lead.
Louisiana Tech responded in kind with a two-run blast of its own to left center to regain the lead by one, 3-2. The Lady Techsters padded that lead in the sixth, scoring four runs on four hits to open a 7-2 advantage.
Emily Kachel (11-12) got the start for UAB in game one and threw 5.2 inning against Louisiana Tech. The right hander surrendered seven runs, six earned, on 10 hits. She walked four and struck out three.
Erwin went 3-for-7 with two RBI and two runs scored in both games combined, while Petree hit 3-for-6 with two runs sored on the day. Rogers and Erwin now have five homers each after their dingers on Saturday.
