Blazers Drop Hard-Fought Match to McKendree, 4-1

LINCOLN, Neb. – The UAB women's bowling team gave it all it had against the NCAA Tournament runner-up in the opening round of the USBC Intercollegiate Team Championship but ultimately fell to McKendree, 4-1, on Thursday at Sun Valley Lanes.
UAB will now compete in the consolation bracket against St. Ambrose, with play beginning at 7:45 a.m. The tournament is now single elimination for the remainder of the tournament.
"I'm really proud of how hard the girls fought today," head coach Michelle Crews said. "The first 24 games was really about getting comfortable at the center and on the oil pattern. We tried some things that worked and some things that didn't. We communicated well, but at the end of the day, our first 12 games weren't where they needed to be."
The Blazers opened the day with 24 Baker games and found themselves in 15th place through 12 games with a pinfall of 2,112. UAB dug deep in the final 12 games of the qualifying rounds, improving its score by 155 pins to post a total of 2,267 and move into 13th place with the opportunity to face off with fourth-seeded McKendree.
Round one got off to a perfect start, as UAB was able to claim the opening game by a score 221-202 and take the early 1-0 lead.
From there, it was McKendree who took the next two games, including a hotly contested Game 3, 211-195. The next match was just as close, as the Blazers fell behind 3-1 after a score of 206-189 despite strong efforts in the closing frames.
"I was unbelievably proud of how the committed to our plan and to each other we were," Crews added. "They held some very close games, but McKendree performed better. We have nothing to hang our heads about. We need to keep our energy and momentum into tomorrow morning and fight as long as possible in the contender's bracket.
With their backs against the wall, the Blazers gave their all in the fifth game but could not overcome a surging Bearcats squad, who stole the match late by a score of 204-188 to seal the 4-1 match victory.
