BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The UAB men's golf team battled through difficult course conditions on the final day of The Cleveland Golf Palmetto Invitational to post its best team finish of the season (fourth overall) at +16 (281-277-298 = 856).
"The entire field was hindered by the weather today but I was proud of our team's effort prior to the prolonged rain delay," head coach Mike Wilson said. "We didn't finish well after the rain delay but it was a good learning experience for our team. Overall I was happy with how we played this weekend which was highlighted by Murray's 63 yesterday."
On the heels of a tournament record 63 (-7) in round two, Murray Naysmith carded a 75 (+5) and tied for 10th place overall – his best finish of the season – at +1 (73-63-75 = 211), to lead the Blazers.
Two other Blazers turned in top-20 individual scores as R.J. Keur fired UAB's low round of the day with a two-over par (72) and finished in a tie for 14th overall at +4 (214). Keur has now posted a top-20 result in four different tournaments.
Junior John Hayden was also steady throughout the two-day event and picked up his first top-20 individual result (T17) of the year with a cumulative five over par (68-72-75 = 215).
William Walker III, who recently entered the Golfstat.com top-250 at No. 214, finished just outside the top-20 at +6 (T22).
Virginia took home the team title (E), followed by Georgia Southern (+9) and USC-Aiken (+15).
Jake Storey of Georgia Southern and Daniel Overas from Coastal Carolina tied for the low score among individuals at three-under par.
UAB returns to action March 16-18 at the Schenkel Invitational in Statesboro, Ga.
