STATESBORO, Ga. – The UAB men's golf team collectively had one of its best outings of the season in the first round of the Schenkel Invitational at Forest Heights Country Club in Statesboro, Ga.
Four of the five UAB golfers are currently inside the top 35 and UAB as a whole shot +1 and is tied for seventh place overall in the highly competitive field which features two teams ranked nationally inside the top five.
"There were a lot of positives today and I am very pleased with the team's effort," head coach Mike Wilson said. "We need to make a few more birdies tomorrow to get in contention for the title but today was a major step in the right direction."
Sophomore Murray Naysmith led the way with a one under 71 and is tied for 15th after 18 holes. Naysmith had three of his four birdies come on the back nine and is four shots off the lead heading into tomorrow's second round.
R.J. Keur is one shot behind Naysmith and is in a tie for 19th with an even par 72. Playing in his first spring tournament, Taylor Eyster shot a one over 73, as did John Hayden and both are in a tie for 33rd.
Overall, UAB enters Saturday's second round in a tie for seventh with College of Charleston and host Georgia Southern. No. 5 Vanderbilt (-11) is leading the field, followed by Kentucky (-5), Mississippi State (-3), NC State (-2) Notre Dame (-2) and Georgia State (E).
