UAB's Relay Teams Star on Final Day of Florida Relays

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The UAB track and field team finished the Florida Relays on Saturday with a flourish and posted several times that are the best the program has seen in several years.

In the shuttle hurdle relay, Ali Cichos, Kyla Horn, Jenn Sharpe and Brittany Floyd finished with a time of 60.41 which is the fastest time for the Blazers in that event since 2014. Not to be out done, the 4x200-meter relay team of Shelbi White, Horn, Taylor Jones and Lauren Capone ran a 1:38.31, also the fastest time run by a UAB squad since 2014.

On Friday, Rebecca Evans ran a strong 1500-meter posting a time of 4:38.02 despite the rainy conditions that hampered events through out the day.

Blazer Highlights

The 4x800-meter relay team of Evans, Marielle Lewis, Bethan Evans and Celestial Moon ran a 9:20.22 which is a six second improvement from last season.
Bethan Evans, Capone, Lewis and Moon made up the Distance Medley Relay team and posted a time of 12:27.70, an improvement of 19 seconds from a year ago.
Cichos ran a solid 14.42 in the 100-meter hurdles in the rain on Friday.

"We had a lot of races and a lot of work from this meet. Lauren Capone was a trooper, running four relays with three of them on Saturday," Thomas said. "Her and Marielle did everything we needed them to do and they really came through for us. The Shuttle Hurdle team ran 1.5 seconds faster than last week which was good to see and those girls ran strong hurdle races. Ali, Mo and Brittany ran solid races in the Sprint Medley Relay and Kyla, Lauren and Taylor stepped up and helped run a very solid 4x2. Beth, Cele and Marielle doubled back and raced the 4x8 and DMR getting some good races under their belts. We still have a long way to go, but these ladies raced hard, never gave up and will be better because of it in the next few meets."

UAB will stay in state next week as they will run in the Alabama Invite in Tuscaloosa, Ala.
