BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – UAB entered Saturday's game against Middle Tennessee looking for the sweep, but it wasn't meant to be as the Blue Raiders won Game 3, 4-3 at Mary Bowers Field.
The Blazers have now won two consecutive Conference USA series and are off to their best start in conference play since beginning the 2016 conference slate 6-3.
Middle Tennessee (24-12, 6-6 C-USA) got a fabulous pitching performance from Cori Jennings (11-6) as she shutout the Blazers for five innings, throwing a complete game and allowing just three runs on seven hits.
The Blue Raiders did what they couldn't do on Friday night, getting hits off UAB starter Claire Blount. Blount (2-11) allowed four runs and gave up six hits while striking out two. The lefty tossed 2.1 innings and was relieved by Emily Kachel.
Kachel stifled Middle Tennessee while striking out four batters and allowing just two hits through 4.2 innings of work.
UAB (13-22-1, 5-3-1 C-USA) trailed 4-0 going into the sixth inning when three-straight singles from Destini England, Natalie Erwin and Rachel Rogers pushed across the Blazers' first run of the day as England came across to score on Roger's single. A grounder moved Erwin and Rogers into scoring position.
Molli Garcia stepped to the plate with two out in the sixth and hit a single to left which drove Erwin and Rogers home to bring UAB to within one run. Garcia tried to advance to second but was thrown to end the inning.
Kachel worked a quick top half of the seventh to bring the Blazers back to the plate, but Jennings was able to get UAB out in order to secure the win for the Blue Raiders.
Middle Tennessee tallied early with two runs off four hits in the top of the first inning and then got a two-run home run in the third to take its 4-0 lead.
UAB recorded seven hits on the day with Garcia picking up three of them to go 3-for-3 with two RBI.
