"Three hard fought, constant stress, high pressure, gut-wrenching games and all three could have gone either way," head coach Brian Shoop said. "I'm so proud of our guys for the way they fought and I love them. I'm going to encourage them after this game, not fault them, because I thought they played great all weekend."
For the third time this weekend a team struck in the first inning, this time it was both teams. LA Tech (19-7, 5-1) grabbed an early 1-0 lead when Tanner Huddleston tripled to center field scoring Hunter Wells who led off the game with a walk.
UAB (10-12, 3-2) responded in the home half of the inning as Tyler Tolbert hit a leadoff single up the middle and moved up to second on a failed pickoff attempt by the Bulldog pitcher. Cole Collins hit another single up the middle to score Tolbert and tie the game at one.
LA Tech added its second run of the game in the third inning as Graham Hackbarth led off the frame with a single into centerfield. He would come around to score two batters later as Wells hit a RBI single to left field and the Bulldogs took a 2-1 lead.
The Blazers tied the game in the bottom of the third as Tolbert and Collins picked up their second hits of the game before Colton Schultz singled into center field to score Tolbert and knot the game at 2.
LA Tech regained the lead again in the fourth inning when Huddleston reached base for the second time with a leadoff walk. He would come around to score on a Chris Clayton groundout to shortstop as the Bulldogs took a 3-2 lead.
Tolbert reached base for the third time in the fifth inning as he got on with a fielder's choice. He moved up to second when Collins was struck by a pitch and then the game repeated itself with Schultz driving in Tolbert to once again tie the game at three.
Neither team recorded a run over the next six innings sending the game into the 12th inning. LA Tech scored six runs on four hits taking a 9-3 lead into the home half of the inning.
Nathan Anthes collected his first career hit with a two-out single to keep the game alive. He moved up 90-feet on a passed ball and then advanced to third on a wild pitch before Tolbert grabbed his third hit of the contest scoring Anthes to give UAB its final run.
Kyle Griffen came on in relief in the fourth inning and to pitch 6.2 innings with just two hits and no runs while striking out five to get his second win of the season for the Bulldogs. Carson Jones took the loss for the Blazers.
The top third of the order led the Blazers offensively highlighted by Tolbert's three hit and three run day. The sophomore is now hitting . 346 in Conference USA play scoring seven runs on nine hits with three stolen bases.
Schultz has been on an offensive tear and finished the game 2-for-4 with two RBI for his third multi-hit game in the last four contests.
UAB closes its four-game homestand on Tuesday night when it welcomes cross-town rival Samford to Regions Field. First pitch between the Blazers and Bulldogs is slated for 6:30 p.m.
