FRISCO, Texas - UAB sophomore outfielder Destini England was selected as the Conference USA Player of the Week after she went 9-for-13 with 8 RBI, three doubles, scored four runs and hit .692, the league office announced on Monday.
UAB only played three games this week with all of them coming on the road against Conference USA foe UTEP. The Blazers came away with the series victory, winning game one 11-0 and game two 8-6. England played in all three games and hit over .700 in games one and two and picked up six of her eight RBI in those games. The Hoover, Ala., native hit .692 in game three and added two more RBI.
Making her weekend even more impressive was England's knack for coming up with clutch hits. Six of her eight runs batted in came with two outs and five of the nine hits also came with UAB down to two outs.
England hit .800 (4-for-5) with runners in scoring position and went 2-for-3 with the bases loaded.
"Destini came through in the clutch all weekend long, both in getting on base and setting up the offense and getting hits with runners on to drive in runs," head coach Amanda Ellis said. "She is really hitting her stride this season and we are looking for her to continue to be a tough at-bat for our opponents."
UAB will hit the road again this week as it travels to No. 12 Alabama on Tuesday, March 20. First pitch is scheduled for 6 p.m. CT.
