MOBILE, Ala. – The UAB track and field team opened the outdoor portion of its season this weekend at South Alabama.
The Blazers had several strong performances including one from heptathlete Brittany Floyd who scored 31.04 meters in the Women's Javelin. Floyd, a freshman, is coming off a solid indoor campaign and also scored well in the Long Jump with a distance of 5.57-meters (18' 31/4'') finishing fifth in the Long Jump.
Blazer Highlights
4x100-meter Relays: The 4x1 squad of Joy Frierson, Shelbi White, Taylor Jones and Ebony Tolliver won the event with a time of 45.61 seconds. It is UAB's fastest opening time in more than 10 years and almost cracked the top five all-time fastest times.
Keila Robertson: The sophomore competed well in the Long Jump next to her teammate Floyd and jumped a distance of 5.58-meters (18' 33/4''). Robertson placed fourth in the event.
Kyla Horn: Horn set a new PR in the 100-meter hurdles with a time of 15.17 seconds.
Ali Cichos: Cichos finished fourth in the 100-meter hurdles running it in a time of 14.61 seconds.
Track Side with Head Coach Kurt Thomas:
"We opened the season with some solid performances. It's always interesting to see how the athletes will perform after a break from competition from indoor to outdoor," Thomas said. "The triple jumpers and throwers dealt with some poor weather last night and Brittany's javelin throw was a good sign for the heptathlon. The distance athletes got some good competition but the hot weather and humidity was a shock to their system, however, its only going to get warmer as the season progresses. The 4x1 ran very well and there are plenty of things to clean up on that relay, but they know what to work on and they can be very good. Keila and Brittany long jumped well and Mo and Cynthia got some PR's in that event. We have a long way to go to reach our team and individual goals, but this was a good way to start our season."
