Blazers Clinch Series With 3-1 Extra Innings Win
3/17/2018 9:45:00 PM | Baseball
Charleston, W. Va. – The UAB baseball team maintained its poise in extra innings after giving up a one run lead in the ninth en route to a series-clinching 3-1 over Marshall win on a rainy evening at Appalachian Power Park.
The Blazers (8-9, 2-0 C-USA) reverted to their fundamentals to tack on the game-deciding runs in the 11th.
Tyler Tolbert and Cole Collins both reached via walks to open the frame, and Luke Eigsti reached when the junior laid down a perfectly placed bunt that the Thundering Herd pitcher was unable to handle.
Carter Pharis then dropped in another bunt and Tolbert scored easily on the squeeze play. Thomas Johns, who entered the inning as a pinch hitter, drove in another run courtesy of a sacrifice fly that was caught on the warning track in right center field.
"It was another tight, tight game that could have gone either way, both the games could have gone either way and I am thankful and happy that they went ours," head coach Brian Shoop said.
UAB opened the scoring in the fifth inning when shortstop Antonio Ralat ripped an RBI double to left center, scoring Blake Johnson, who had doubled to left center earlier in the frame.
Marshall (10-6, 0-2) tied the game in the ninth on an RBI single, but UAB would escape a one out jam to force extra innings.
Reliever Carson Jones – who pitched 1.2 innings out of the bullpen on Friday night – was dynamite again to pick up his second win in as many days.
"It is really hard when you are a pitcher and you give up the tying run, to recover emotionally and extend the game, that was big in the ninth when they had the winning run on third with one out and he pitched out of that, so that gave us a chance and we were able to scratch out two more," Shoop said.
It was another quality start from a UAB starter as senior Ryan Ruggles went 6.0 innings for his longest outing of the year while giving up zero runs. Ruggles tied his career high with seven strikeouts against two walks while scattering five hits.
"That's the best Ryan has been all year. He is capable, so I am not surprised, but that is the best he has been this year," Shoop said.
Collins, Tolbert and Price Visintainer all chipped in singles, while four different arms from the UAB bullpen combined for five innings of three-hit baseball and the UAB defense finished their second consecutive game without committing an error to complete the team effort.
The Blazers go for the series sweep tomorrow at 11 a.m. CST.
