Blazers Drop Series Finale

Charleston, W. Va. – The UAB baseball team dropped Sunday's finale to Marshall 6-0 but picked up a critical opening series win to begin conference play.
The Blazers (8-10, 2-1 C-USA) had trouble solving Marshall starting pitcher Will Ray, who threw a complete game shutout on 93 pitches with zero walks while allowing only four hits.
"Ryan (Wesson) wasn't as good as he's been, and that happens, and their guy Ray was just lights out. He had a 1.1 ERA coming in and threw 75 percent strikes and we just couldn't generate anything against him," head coach Brian Shoop said. "It was pretty much him dominating the day, so we'll tip our cap and get back to work."
Marshall (11-6, 1-2 C-USA) was able to push across runs in the first, third, fourth, fifth and eighth innings.
Thomas Johns paced the UAB offensive attack with two hits, including his fourth double of the season.
Tyler Tolbert, Antonio Ralat and Price Visintainer were the only other Blazers to record base knocks. All three aforementioned players tallied hits in each contest while Tolbert finished the series 5-for-12.
UAB recorded three more double plays over the duration of the weekend to bring its season total to 20, while five Blazer arms combined on Sunday to give up just one run on one hit in 4.0 innings.
The Blazers return to action Tuesday night against Alabama. First pitch from Regions Field is slated for 6:30 p.m.
