Blazers Split The First Two Games Of 2018

TAMPA, Fla. – UAB split its first two games of the 2018 season, beating Illinois State 2-1 but falling to Michigan 7-0 at the USF DeMarini Tournament.
UAB (1-1) got on the board first against Illinois State with a solo blast over the left field wall from Analyse Petree in the bottom half of the fourth inning. Illinois State answered back in the top of the fifth.
After loading the bases with just one out, Shannon Felde singled to center which scored Stephanie Thulen from third. Freshman pitcher Emily Kachel battled back and got the next two hitters to fly out.
In the bottom half of the fifth, UAB got things going with a leadoff walk by Katelyn Prater who was moved into scoring position by Madison Millsaps. Claire Blount laced a double to right field scoring Prater and giving the Blazers the lead once again.
Illinois State (0-2) threatened again in the top half of the sixth, moving the Red Bird's Alyssa Wiebel to third with just one out in the inning. Like Kachel earlier in the game, it was Blount who fought back to end the threat.
Megan Smith helped her pitcher out by snagging a hot shot at third and kept a run from scoring. Blount then got the next hitter to hit an easy grounder to second and closed out the top of the sixth.
Kachel threw five innings against Illinois State allowing five hits, one run while striking out two. She also threw back-to-back 1,2,3 innings in the second and third to keep the Red Bird offense from gaining any momentum.
Blount threw two innings in relief allowing just one hit and shut down several Illinois State scoring chances. Blount picked up her first save of the season and with the win over Illinois State, Kachel earned her first career win in her first career start.
UAB was lead on offense by Blount and Petree who both went 1-for-2 and drove in the Blazer's two runs. Prater, Destini England and Smith each collected hits as well.
In the first game of the against No. 18 Michigan, UAB held the Wolverines in check most of the day. The Blazers allowed just one run in the first and one in the sixth.
Michigan (2-0) did its damage in the third however, scoring five runs. After Faith Canfield hit a leadoff single through the left side and Thais Gonzalez drew a walk, Alden Falk singled to right but an error allowed two runs to score as Falk advanced to third.
A walk and a hit batter loaded the bases and a second hit batsmen pushed across another run for the Wolverines. Blount, who started the game, got the next hitter to strikeout looking before giving up a single to right which scored their fourth run of the inning.
Kachel came in for relief and threw a wild pitch that allowed the final run of the inning to score. Madsion Uden tried to score on another wild pitch from Kachel but was tagged out by Kachel at home to end the bottom of the third.
UAB had its chances against Michigan, in the top of the first England drew a leadoff walk and Petree singled to left. Millsaps moved England and Petree into scoring position but a ground out and strike out ended the scoring chance.
In the third the Green and Gold loaded the bases with two outs but again couldn't bring home any runs. In the seventh, UAB had the bases loaded with nobody out but Michigan pitcher Meghan Beaubien struck out the next two hitters and got a ground out to end the inning and the game.
Millsaps and Petree both went 2-for-4 and collected four of the Blazers' six hits against Michigan.
Blount threw 2.2 innings giving up six runs on five hits and striking out two hitters. Kachel tossed 3.1 innings against the Wolverines allowing just two hits and one run to score.
UAB returns to the field on Feb. 10 at 7:30 p.m. CT against tournament host USF. The game will be live streamed on USF's Facebook page.
