UAB Has Strong Showing In Boston

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The UAB track and field team had a strong showing in Boston over the weekend at the Harvard Crimson Invitational and at the Bruce Lehane Scarlett and White Invitational hosted by Boston University.
Serena Martinez broke the school record in the 1000-meters with a time of 2:56.79, besting the time of 2:59.68 set by Lucy Taylor in 2010. It wasn't just the school record that fell though, Bethan Evans broke the freshman record in the 1000-meters running it in 2:56.88. The previous freshman record was set last season by Martinez when she ran it in 3:00.88.
With most of the team was in Boston, Francesca Chambers competed at the South Alabama Jaguar Invitational where she set a new school record and personal best in the weight throw. Chambers tossed a mark of 46'0.5.
In all, 13 PRs were set over the weekend putting UAB in great position heading towards the conference meet next week.
Blazer Highlights:
Ali Meister set a PR in the 60-meter hurdles finishing with a 8.89 at the Crimson Invitational while Kyla Horn also set a new PR in the 60-meter hurdles at Harvard posting a time of 9.05.
Karri Green and Lauren Capone also set new PRs in the 400-meters with Green running it in 57.47 to also finish third in the event while Capone ran the 400 in 58.60.
Keila Robertson and freshman Brittany Floyd both set new PRs in the Long Jump with Robertson jumping 5.58 meters (18'3.75) while Floyd cleared a distance of 5.55 meters (18'2.5).
Green also set a new PR in the 500-meters with a time of 1:17.27.
Horn also set a second PR during the weekend in the 200-meter dash with a time of 26.13 while freshman Taylor Jones also set a new PR in the 200, running it in 25.13.
Martinez and Evans got their weekend started off with new PRs in the Mile with Martinez running it in 5:07.26 and Evans in 5:07.40. Marielle Lewis joined them and set a new PR of her own in the Mile with a time of 5:15.18.
Track Side with Head Coach Kurt Thomas:
"We had a very solid and successful weekend up in Boston," Thomas said. "The girls showed up ready to compete and they did just that. They are starting the put races together and we are getting better and adding names to the C-USA performance list for the conference meet. I am very pleased but we need to keep our momentum going."
Next Up:
UAB will run in the Samford Invite Feb. 9-10 at the Birmingham CrossPlex before hosting the Conference USA Indoor Championships also at the Birmingham CrossPlex Feb. 17 and 18.
