UAB Has Final Warm-Up Before Conference Championships

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The UAB track and field team had its final tune up before next weekend's Conference USA Indoor Championships. The Blazers ran at the Samford Invitational at the Birmingham CrossPlex, the site of the C-USA Indoor Championships.

It was another solid day for the Green and Gold as five Blazers set new PRs. Taylor Jones and Lauren Capone spearheaded the meet for UAB as Jones set a new PR in the Women's 200-meters with a time of 24.91. The time placed her fourth overall in the 200-meter final.

Capone set her new PR in the Women's 400-meter and also won the event with a run of 57.07. Hot on her heels and also setting a new PR in the 400 was teammate Karri Green won placed fourth with a time of 57.43.

Blazer Highlights:

Ali Meister set a new PR in the 60-meter hurdles with a time of 8.96.
In the Mile, Bethan Evans ran a 5:05.72 which sets a new PR for her in the event and also placed her fourth overall at the Samford Invite
Coming in right close behind Evans was Sarah Livett who ran the Mile in 5:07.91, finishing sixth.
Morayo Bhadmos placed third for UAB in the Women's Triple Jump with a distance of 4.89 meters (16' 0.5).

Track Side with Head Coach Kurt Thomas:

"This meet was about sharpening up before the conference championships next weekend," Thomas said. "We've had good progression all season, and this weekend really helped get us ready for the championships. We held out certain athletes to rest them up, and others needed these races. To have 5 personal bests is a good thing at this time of year. Bethan continues to run well, Lauren and Karri had good 400's. Taylor Jones continues to grow as a sprinter and her 200 showed that. Ali has PR'd two weeks in a row, so that is good for her Pentathlon next week. There were several other seasonal bests, and we need all of that momentum at the C-USA Championships"

Up Next:

UAB will host the Conference USA Indoor Championships next weekend Feb. 17-18 at the Birmingham CrossPlex. There will be live stream coverage of the championship on C-USA TV for the morning and evening sessions on the 17th while there will be all-day coverage on 18th. The meet will begin both days at 9 a.m. CT.
