BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The UAB women's tennis team dropped a 4-1 decision to Tulane on Saturday at George Ward Park.
Blazers Hana Sisirak and Jana Hecking captured a 6-4 doubles victory over Christina Sista and Alex Alegre at the No. 3 position, but Tulane answered with wins on the other two courts to claim the point and build a 1-0 advantage.
Ivone Alvaro put Tulane ahead 2-0 following her 6-1, 6-0 win over Megan Bertrands at No. 3, but Sonia Grzywocz cut the deficit in half after she defeated Daniela La Fuente 6-1, 6-1 at No. 6.
Sisti gave the Green Wave a 3-1 edge when she downed Hecking 6-1, 6-2 at No. 5 before Sade Atkinson clinched the win for Tulane with a 3-6, 6-2, 7-5 over Alexandra Shchipakina at No. 1.
"This was a tough one to take today because we were close, particularly with the doubles point," UAB head coach Mark Tjia said. "I was really proud of our fight today. I challenged the girls earlier in the week and they responded. If this young team will continue to trust the process, we are going to be a pretty good team."
UAB returns to action Sunday at 3 p.m. when the Blazers travel to Starkville, Miss., to face Mississippi State from the A.J. Pitts Tennis Centre.
