TROY, Ala. – UAB falls to Murray State in its first extra innings game of the season 4-2 Friday afternoon at the Troy Softball Complex.
Playing under international tiebreaker rules, Murray State started the top of the ninth inning with a runner on second as the Racers' Logan Braundmeier led off the inning with a sacrifice bunt that moved the runner from second to third.
Murray State (4-6) got a single up the middle from Jensen Striegel to score the run from third and take a 2-1 lead. The very next batter, Lillie Goetz, doubled and advanced on the throw which scored Striegel from first to give the Racers a two run lead. Murray State's Jenny Homann pinch hit and singled to center scoring Goetz and gave the Racers a 4-1 lead.
UAB (3-8) finally got out of the top half of the ninth with back-to-back groundouts.
Destini England started the bottom of the ninth on second and was moved to third off an Analyse Petree single to third which bounced off the bag preventing the third baseman from playing the ball clean. Megan Smith drove home England with a sacrifice fly to center as UAB cut the lead down to two.
Madison Millsaps drew a walk to put runners on first and second with two out. However, Rachel Rogers flied out to right field to end the game.
Murray State got the scoring started in the third with a leadoff bunt from Striegel. The Racers moved her around to score using a single and an advance to second on the throw from Goetz while Brenna Finck hit into a fielder's choice that allowed Striegel to score from third.
The Blazers didn't wait long to respond as Natalie Erwin hit a leadoff triple to right center to begin the bottom half of the third. After a groundout, England hit a deep sacrifice fly to center that scored Erwin to tie the game at 1-1.
The game settled into a pitcher's dual until the sixth when it looked like Murray State might break the tie. The Racers used back-to-back singles to put runners on first and second and a sac bunt to move them to second and third.
Lexi Jones reached on a fielder's choice to load the bases with just one out. Braundmeier hit into a fielder's choice to pitcher Claire Blount who threw home for the out. Blount struck out Danielle Walls for the final out of the sixth as Murray State left the bases loaded.
Blount pitched a complete game allowing four runs on eight hits while striking out six. She took the loss and falls to 0-4 on the season.
