BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The UAB men's basketball team puts the finishing touches on a three-game road trip Saturday at 6 p.m. when the Blazers travel to Murfreesboro, Tenn., to face No. 24 Middle Tennessee at the Murphy Center.
UAB (17-11, 8-7) enters the weekend following an 87-69 victory at Southern Miss last Saturday. Senior forward William Lee led the way with a season-high 20 points to go along with 14 rebounds for his sixth double-double of the season. The Selma, Ala., native added one block and is now just 14 rejections shy of becoming only the third player in Conference USA history with 300 career blocked shots.
Zack Bryant finished with 18 points and four rebounds against the Golden Eagles and in the process became UAB's all-time leader for points in a season by a freshman. Overall, Bryant is second on the team with 13.1 points per game and 3.1 assists per game.
Senior Chris Cokley continues to serve as the offensive catalyst for UAB with 17.4 points and 9.1 rebounds per game. Cokley, who ranks sixth in Conference USA in scoring and second in rebounding, also stands atop the league and 13th in the NCAA with 13 double-doubles.
Sophomore Nate Darling chips in with 10.1 points per game and has made a team-high 53 three-pointers and is shooting 40.5 percent from beyond the arc.
Middle Tennessee (22-5, 14-1) stands in first place in Conference USA following an 87-70 road victory at Louisiana Tech to run its winning streak to nine. The Blue Raiders are 9-1 at home and have not lost inside the Murphy Center since Nov. 16 against Belmont.
Senior forward Nick King leads Middle Tennessee with 21.4 points and 8.4 rebounds per game while shooting 49.4 percent from the field. Fellow senior Giddy Potts adds 13.0 points per game and has made a team-best 64 three-pointers. Antwain Johnson also scores in double figures with 10.2 points per game.
UAB and Middle Tennessee will meet on the hardwood for the 17th time in school history when the two teams battle on Saturday. The Blazers own a 10-6 lead and have won five of the last eight games in the all-time series that dates back to the 1986-87 season. In the most recent match-up, Middle Tennessee defeated UAB 63-60 earlier this season (Dec. 30) behind 30 points and eight rebounds from senior Nick King.
