Big Inning Woes Continue as UAB Falls to Stanford

UAB (1-5) took a 6-4 lead into the fifth inning but wouldn't leave with the lead. After a hit batter put one on, Stanford's Teaghan Cowles hit what looked to be an easy grounder to shortstop Natalie Erwin but the ball took a hard hop off the dirt and bounced over Erwin's head and turned into a double.
An error on the next at-bat allowed a run to score and put runners on the corners. A sacrifice fly scored the second run of the inning for the Cardinal followed by another fielding from UAB which put two runners in scoring position.
A ground out to second scored another run for Stanford but with two outs the Blazers looked to be getting out of trouble. However, Lauren Wegner drew a walk and then stole second to again put two runners in scoring position.
Stanford (4-4) would score those two runs before freshman pitcher Bailie Barnes struck out Montana Dixon swinging to end the top half of the fifth. The damage was done though as Stanford had scored five times in the inning and led 9-6.
The game started well however, as UAB took a quick 4-0 lead after two innings.
With two outs in the first, Analyse Petree drew a walk that was followed up by singles from Megan Smith and Madison Millsaps. The single to right from Millsaps scored Petree from second and moved Smith to third.
Claire Blount then drove home Smith with a single to left. Rachel Rogers drew a walk to load the bases for California native Molli Garcia. She was able to draw an RBI walk which scored Millsaps to give the Blazers an early 3-0 lead.
Erwin leadoff the second inning for UAB by getting hit by a pitch and was moved to third off of a Destini England single through the right side. England was thrown out trying to steal second but Erwin scored on the throw to extend the Blazer lead to 4-0.
Stanford got two runs back in the top half of the third with a two-run bomb down the left field line but starting pitcher Emily Kachel limited the damage to just those two runs.
In the fourth, Stanford tied the game off a triple to right that scored two runs. The Green and Gold didn't wait to respond as they struck back with two runs of their own in the bottom half of the fourth.
Rogers reached safely on an error by the shortstop and was pinch ran for by Katlyn Sides. She advanced to second after the Cardinal catcher tried to throw behind her but over threw the first baseman which sent Sides racing to second.
Garcia reached on a throwing error from Stanford's third baseman and advanced all the way to third as Sides went from second to home. Erwin hit a sacrifice fly to center to score Garcia and UAB reclaimed the lead 6-4.
After the five runs in the fifth inning, Stanford scored one in the sixth and two runs in the seventh to take the 12-6 win.
Barnes took the loss and falls to 0-1 on the year after throwing three innings and giving up eight runs on eight hits, just three of those runs were earned. She also struck out two and walked two.
Kachel tossed four innings allowing four runs on six hits, struck out two batters and walked one.
