BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Georgia State scored the final four points of the match to erase a 2-0 deficit en route to a 4-2 victory over the UAB women's tennis team Friday morning in non-conference action.
UAB swept all three doubles matches and won the point on its way to building a 1-0 advantage. Alexandra Shchipakina and Dominika defeated Arina Taluyenko and Lara Vovk 6-3 at No. 2, and Hana Sisirak and Jana Hecking won 6-3 over Daniela Ramirez and Anastasia Grosheva at No. 3 to clinch the point. The Blazer duo of Marlene Herrmann and Sonia Grzywocz completed the sweep at No. 1 with a 6-4 win over Kristin Rehse and Damira Muminovic.
Megan Bertrands put UAB ahead 2-0 following her 6-1, 6-2 singles win over Muminovic at No. 4. Rehse cut the lead in half after she defeated Shchipakina 6-3, 6-1 at No. 1, and Taluyenko tied the score for Georgia State with a 6-4, 6-2 victory over Sisirak at No. 3.
Ramirez won the third consecutive point for the Panthers following her 6-1, 4-6, 6-2 victory over Herrmann at No. 2, and Vovk completed the comeback and sealed the win for Georgia State with a 7-5, 6-0 victory over Grzywocz at No. 6.
"The positive we take from this match is that we played well in doubles and have continued to get better each match," UAB head coach Mark Tjia said. "We showed today that we can go toe to toe with a team that has recently reached the NCAA Tournament and is very likely to make it again this season. Hopefully we can use these experiences to help us in the future."
UAB returns to action Sunday at 10 a.m. when the Blazers travel to Macon, Ga., to face Mercer.
