BIRMINGHAM – In a tight back-and-forth battle, UAB used a 23-point scoring performance from Jalen Perry to fend off Arkansas Monticello, 75-67, on Saturday afternoon in Bartow Arena.
Perry was one of four Blazers to score in double figures against the Boll Weevils and became just the second Blazer to score 20 or more points in a game this season. Joining Perry in double figures was Jeremiah Bell who chipped in 15 points to tie his career high, Zack Bryant who scored 13 and Makhtar Gueye who knocked down 11 points.
Perry's 23 points is a new career high for the senior guard who started the game by going 3-for-3 from beyond the arc. He knocked down a career high five 3-pointers, nailed a career high nine field goals, pulled down four boards and dished out three assists in the victory.
UAB (8-5) took a two-point lead into the half after closing out the opening 20 minutes on a 11-4 run. The Green and Gold shot 42.3 percent (11-for-26) from the field and a 50.0 percent (5-for-10) effort from long distance in the first half.
Bryant sparked the run with a jumper which Gueye followed up with a jumper of his own. Gueye knocked down a three, Bryant hit a layup and Gueye hit another jumper to give the Blazers a 32-28 lead. A late layup from the Boll Weevils made it 32-30 going into the half.
Arkansas Monticello (7-4) held a one-point lead, 50-49, with 11:46 remaining in the game when the Blazers took off on a 11-6 run to claim a four point, 60-56, lead. The Boll Weevils hit two free throws to cut it to a two-point lead, but that was as close as they would get.
The Blazers closed the game on a 15-9 point scoring run over the final 5:41 and took the win 75-67.
UAB hit nine 3-pointers for the third time this season and ended the game shooting 48.1 percent (26-for-54) from the floor and hit on 47.4 percent (9-for-19) from the three-point line in the game.
The win closes out non-conference play for the Blazers as conference action beings in earnest on Thursday, January 3 at home against Florida Atlantic. Tipoff against the Owls is set for 7 p.m.
