UAB Falls to Southern Miss in Four Sets

HATTIESBURG, Miss. – Opening its final road trip of the regular season at Southern Miss on Friday night, the UAB volleyball fell to the Golden Eagles, 3-1 (16-25, 25-20, 22-25, 23-25) at Reed Green Coliseum.
The Blazers had strong performances from Victoria Young, Alex Kells and Abby Carlile who each posted double digit kills. Young led the team with 12 while Kells and Carlile notched 11 apiece. Young hit .400 percent for the match with Emily Rudolph hitting .375 and Kells hitting at a .318 clip.
Redshirt sophomore Emma Mitchell set a new career high against Southern Miss, firing home four service aces, breaking her previous career high of three.
UAB (13-13. 5-7 C-USA) scored 53 kills off a .264 percent hitting night, racked up 51 assists and 44 digs against Southern Miss. However, the Golden Eagles had 54 kills while hitting .339 with 49 assists and 46 digs.
Set One: UAB 16, Southern Miss 25
Southern Miss (14-12, 6-5 C-USA) used a 7-1 scoring run right out of the gates to jump out to the early lead against UAB. The Golden Eagles pushed its lead to 14-6 thanks to a 6-1 run midway through the opening set. The Blazers battled back late but ultimately fell, 25-16.
Set Two: UAB 25, Southern Miss 20
Shaking off the first set defeat, UAB went right to work in the second, getting out to an early 9-7 lead after a five-point run. The Green and Gold went on an 8-1 run, busting open the set and taking the lead 19-13. Southern Miss made a late push but couldn't close the gap and UAB took the second set 25-20.
Set Three: UAB 22, Southern Miss 25
After battling back-and-forth and trading the lead to begin the third, Southern Miss broke off a 6-0 run to gain the advantage, 13-7. UAB cut the score to two points twice throughout the remainder of the set, but couldn't get any closer as it fell 25-22.
Set Four: UAB 23, Southern Miss 25
In a set that mirrored the third, it was UAB who used a 6-0 run to take an early advantage and keep the Golden Eagles at bay. Unlike the Blazers though, Southern Miss was able to cut the score down and finish the comeback, using a late 8-2 run to take the lead in the set. After UAB tied it at 23-23, Southern Miss finished things off with back-to-back points, winning 25-23.

The road trip continues with a visit to the number one team in the league, Rice, on Sunday, November 4. First serve is set for 1 p.m.
UAB will return home to Bartow Arena on Thursday, November 8 for its final regular season match against WKU at 7 p.m. The Blazers will honor their four seniors before the match on Senior Night.
