BIRMINGHAM – The UAB volleyball team heads out on the road for two crucial matches against Southern Miss and Rice on Friday, November 2, and Sunday, November 4, in its final regular-season road trip. First serve against Southern Miss is scheduled for 6 p.m. on Friday.
UAB (13-12, 5-6 C-USA) is currently tied with Charlotte for eighth place in the Conference USA standings with three matches remaining. The top-eight teams in the league make it to the conference tournament and Charlotte owns the tiebreaker over UAB.
The Green and Gold are riding a two-game winning streak after wins over Louisiana Tech and Middle Tennessee this past weekend. The Blazers were down two sets to none and stormed back to defeat LA Tech in five sets before sweeping Middle Tennessee.
Under first-year head coach Amy Pauly, UAB has produced its best overall and conference record since 2013.
"This weekend is no different than any other," Pauly said. "Our goal is to show up and compete and play a complete match. We have improved on that throughout the season and I expect that to continue. To be successful this weekend, we have to take our serve and pass to another level as both teams are very solid and will challenge us to play at a high level."
Southern Miss (13-12, 5-5 C-USA) enters the weekend seventh in the league and is coming off wins over Southeastern Louisiana and Marshall. The Golden Eagles are led offensively by Kylie Grandy, who has notched 429 kills this season and averages 4.86 kills per set. Along the back line, Madison Lawler and Sarah Bell anchor Southern Miss with 332 and 309 digs, respectively.
Rice (19-4, 10-0 C-USA) is tops in the league and has won 13-straight matches coming into the weekend. Nicole Lennon has been a force for the Owls with 347 kills and is hitting at a .272 clip. Lee Ann Cunningham has paced the defense with 424 digs, while Morgan Grace has 93 blocks on the year.
