UAB Drops Four Set Decision to Rice

HOUSTON – Playing in its 21st road match of the season, the UAB volleyball team fell to the Rice Owls, 3-1 (18-25, 13-25, 25-19, 21-25), on Sunday afternoon at Tudor Fieldhouse.
Abby Carlile set the pace for the Blazer offense as she picked up 17 kills and hit .364 percent. The sophomore now has 276 kills and averages 3.00 per set for the year. Against conference opponents, Carlile has 132 kills.
Emily Rudolph made her presence felt at the net with five blocks on the afternoon and the senior chipped in offensively with five kills and three digs. Fellow senior Victoria Young had three blocks against the Owls and added three kills and four digs.
Sophomore setter Shelby Holderfield had 38 assists in the match and now stands at 994 assists for the season. She averages 10.35 assists per set and entered the match third in the conference in that category.
Set One: UAB 18, Rice 25
UAB (13-14, 5-8 C-USA) started well with a 3-0 lead and pushed it to 7-2. Following an Owls timeout, Rice chipped away at the Blazer lead with a 4-0 run, cutting it to one point and then used a 5-1 run to take the lead at 11-10. UAB tied it up at 11-11 but Rice went on an 8-2 run and took command of the set at 19-13. The Owls closed on a three-point run to win the opening set 25-18.
Set Two: UAB 13, Rice 25
Rice (21-4, 12-0 C-USA) fell behind the Blazers to start the second but quickly regrouped and went on a 7-0 run to take a 7-2 lead. UAB hung around but a 7-1 run broke open the set and gave Rice a 17-8 advantage. The Owls ended things with a 5-2 scoring run, taking the second set 25-13.
Set Three: UAB 25, Rice 19
It was a back-and-forth affair early but the Blazers used an 8-1 scoring run to take a 13-8 lead over Rice and never looked back. The Owls did manage to cut the lead to three late in the set but a 5-2 charge at the end propelled the Blazers to the third set win at 25-19.
Set Four: UAB 21, Rice 25
The Owls bounced back from the third set loss and jumped out to an early 8-3 lead on the Blazers. However, UAB battled back and strung together several two-point runs, getting the set to within one point on three occasions. Late in the set, Rice went on a 7-2 run to take a 24-18 lead. The Blazers fought off match point three times before eventually falling 25-21 in the fourth set and 3-1 in the match.

UAB will welcome WKU to Birmingham on November 8 for its final regular-season match and Senior Night. The Green and Gold will celebrate its four seniors before the match with first serve scheduled for 7 p.m.
