BIRMINGHAM – The UAB volleyball team celebrates its seniors on Thursday night as the WKU Lady Toppers come to Bartow Arena for the Blazers' regular season finale and Senior Night. First serve is scheduled for 7 p.m., with the senior recognitions starting before the match.
UAB (13-14, 5-8 C-USA) is currently tied with Charlotte for eighth place in the conference with the 49ers holding the tie breaker. Only the top eight schools make the C-USA Tournament and the formula for UAB to get in is beat WKU on Thursday and have Marshall beat Charlotte on Friday.
WKU (18-9, 9-3 C-USA) and the Green and Gold have met once already this season in Bowling Green, Ky., where the Blazers claimed their first win over the Hilltoppers since 1990. UAB beat WKU in four sets as Emma Mitchell and Alex Kells were unstoppable, scoring 13 and 11 kills, respectively.
Abby Carlile added nine kills and four blocks, while Emily Rudolph chipped in with seven kills and five blocks in the first meeting.
The Lady Toppers lost their next two matches following the October 12 meeting with the Blazers but have won four-straight entering Thursday night's contest. WKU's offense is powered by Rachel Anderson who has 362 kills on the year and averages 3.45 kills per set. Anderson leads WKU in blocks, registering 102 and averaging 0.97 blocks per set.
Feeding Anderson the ball is setter Taylor Bebout, who has piled up 807 assists this season. WKU averages 13.97 digs per set and has four players over 200 digs on the year.
"Our focus for Thursday is to end the season by sticking to our main goal, play harder than the opponent, be a great team and play intelligently," head coach Amy Pauly said. "WKU is a great team and to be successful, we'll have to be great in all three of those areas. It will be a fun match especially because we are honoring our seniors. We as a program want to honor and play for those who came before us and laid the foundation."
UAB is led on the offensive end by Abby Carlile and Emma Mitchell, who have 276 and 216 kills, respectively. Carlile is averaging 3.00 kills per set while Mitchell averages 2.48 and leads UAB in aces, scoring 0.26 per set and has 23 aces.
Shelby Holderfield has 994 assists and ranks third in the league in assists per set with 10.35. Brianna Muller and Emily Martinez lead the team in digs, averaging 2.73 and 2.67, respectively. Muller has 240 total digs with Martinez picking up 238.
