BIRMINGHAM – UAB will get its first taste of play away from the friendly confines of Bartow Arena on Thursday at 8:30 p.m. (CST) when it faces (14/13) Florida State in the quarterfinal round of the AdvoCare Invitational in Orlando. The game will be broadcast nationally on ESPNU.
Along with the Blazers and the Seminoles, the field includes the defending national champion Villanova Wildcats, Canisius, College of Charleston, LSU, long-time rival Memphis and Oklahoma State.
"We are treating this tournament as a business trip," head coach Robert Ehsan said. "We will have the chance to play three really quality opponents, beginning with a very good ranked Florida State team, but our guys are up for the challenge. We are looking forward to playing in this elite tournament."
UAB (3-0) has gotten its season off to a strong start, winning its opening three games by an average margin of 15.0 points. In its last game, the team earned program win No. 800 with a resounding 77-47 victory over West Alabama.
The game was a complete performance for UAB, which shot 55.6 percent (30-of-54) from the field and 54.2 percent (13-of-24) from long range. Its 13 made 3-pointers against West Alabama was the most in a single game since hitting 14 against Alabama A&M last season in the BHM Jam.
Through three games this season, Preseason All-Conference performer Zack Bryant leads the way with 15.0 points per game. Jalen Perry (12.0), Lewis Sullivan (10.7) and Tavin Lovan (10.0) are also averaging in double figures, while five different Blazers have had at least one double-figure scoring effort this year.
(14/13) Florida State has opened the season with three-straight wins against Florida (81-60), Tulane (80-69) and fellow tournament participant Canisius (93-61). Guard Terance Mann leads a quartet of Seminoles in double figures, averaging 14.0 points per game, followed closely by teammate PJ Savoy who is averaging 12.0 points per contest.
UAB and Florida State will meet for the fourth time when they take the hardwood on Thursday night, with FSU leading the all-time series, 3-0. The two teams last met on Nov. 16, 2007, at the Glenn Wilkes Classic, with the Noles claiming a 78-70 victory. Over the past two meetings between the two teams, FSU has won by a combined 10 points.
The event continues Friday, November 23, when the Blazers face either LSU or College of Charleston in HP Fieldhouse. Game times and television selections will be determined following the conclusion of the Blazers' Thursday contest.
