UAB Falls to (14/13) Florida State, 81-63

ORLANDO – Sophomore Tyreek Scott-Grayson scored a career-high 16 points on Thanksgiving night but the UAB men's basketball team could not slow down (14/13) Florida State's potent attack as it fell to the Seminoles, 81-63, in the quarterfinal round of the AdvoCare Invitational in Orlando.
Scott-Grayson is the sixth different Blazer this season to score in double figures at least once and just the third to score at least 15 points in a game.
"I thought coming out of the half we did a really good job of being ready to play and being intense," head coach Robert Ehsan said. "We had a really good game plan and we made some good adjustments. I thought the back breaker was when we cut the lead down to 10 and they made those deep 3-pointers at the end of the shot clock. That was really the turning point and we couldn't get over the edge."
Fellow sophomore Zack Bryant finished the night with nine points, four boards and a game-best four assists, while Lewis Sullivan and Jeremiah Bell each contributed eight points. Freshman Tavin Lovan provided a balanced game of his own with six points and six rebounds in 18 minutes of play.
The Blazers forced the Seminoles to commit 18 turnovers and notched nine steals in the game on the defensive side of the ball, but a 38-30 rebounding margin and a ten-point differential (38-28) in the paint in favor of Florida State proved to be the difference.
Florida State (4-0) had four players score in double figures, led by Terance Mann's 17-point effort on 5-of-5 shooting from the floor.
Both teams got off to a sluggish start offensively before Florida State hit back-to-back triples to take an early 6-0 lead. UAB clawed back into the game and played within striking distance until a 10-0 run over a two-minute span midway through the first half put the Noles up 22-11.
That lead remained firm for the Seminoles, with the margin growing to as big as 13, but UAB weathered the storm and went to the locker room down 42-31 following late free throws from Bell.
Momentum looked to be on the Blazers' side early in the second half when three-straight layups from Will Butler, Bryant and Lovan cut the Seminole lead to 44-37 at the 16:57 mark of the second half. However, back-to-back triples by the Noles on their next two possessions quickly shot their advantage back into double figures, 50-37.
From there, Florida State maintained a steady double-digit lead and rode out the second half to secure an 81-63 victory in the two teams' fourth-ever meeting.
The event continues Friday, November 23, when UAB faces College of Charleston in HP Field House. Tipoff is set for 5:30 p.m. (CST) on ESPN3. More information on the 2018 AdvoCare Invitational, including a complete schedule, ticket information and more, can be found here.
