UAB Drops Tough Game to College of Charleston, 74-51

ORLANDO – UAB fell into a double-digit hole late in the first half that it could not climb out of before eventually falling to College of Charleston, 74-51, in the consolation round of the AdvoCare Invitational on Friday night in Orlando.
With the result, the Blazers will wrap up tournament play on Sunday morning when they face off with Canisius in the seventh-place game. Tip is set for 9:30 a.m. (CST) and will be broadcast nationally on ESPNU.
Turnovers proved to be a costly factor with UAB committing 18 on the night, which Charleston turned into 18 points on the other end of the floor. The Blazers' shooting woes continued as well after the team shot just 35.0 percent (21-of-60) from the floor.
UAB (3-2) did continue its trend of dominant rebounding, winning that category 38-29. The team has now outrebounded its opponent in four of its five games this year.
Lewis Sullivan and Jeremiah Bell paced the Blazers with 11 points, while Tavin Lovan and Will Butler each added eight points. Makhtar Gueye led the team in rebounding with seven to go along with six points, just ahead of Butler's six boards.
College of Charleston (4-2) was led by Grant Riller, who finished with a game-high 33 points. Jarell Brantley also scored in double figures for the Cougars with 15 points.
Things looked good in the early goings for the Blazers, who took a 4-0 lead in the opening 1:20 courtesy of back-to-back layups by Zack Bryant and Lovan. That good fortune took a sharp turn over the next 12 minutes when a 22-8 run completely flipped the momentum and put the Cougars ahead 22-12 with 6:20 in the half, a lead that they held onto throughout the remainder of the half to take a 30-18 advantage into halftime.
After giving up an early layup to the Cougars in the second half, the Blazers responded with a 7-0 run that forced a Charleston timeout after its lead was cut to 34-27. That stoppage of play proved to be crucial in crushing UAB's momentum when College of Charleston came out and hit back-to-back 3-pointers to extend its lead out to 42-29.
From that point on, UAB traded buckets with College of Charleston but never posed a real threat in the second half as the Cougars rode out the half and locked up a 74-51 victory.
