BIRMINGHAM – The UAB women's soccer team eyes its third consecutive conference win on Sunday at 1 p.m. when the Blazers take on the four-time reigning Conference USA champion North Texas Mean Green at the Mean Green Soccer Stadium.
UAB (6-4-1, 3-1-0) is looking to hand North Texas its first conference loss of the season when the two teams meet for the fifth time. A win on Sunday will secure the Blazers' first-ever victory in Denton and will give head coach Erica Demers win number 20 at the helm of the program.
"For us to slow down such a great attacking program we will need our best from our entire team," Demers said. "We have stressed all year to our players that everyone needs to be engaged and completing their responsibilities on the field for us to have success. We will need all of this and more to have success against a team that has each year proven to be one of the best."
Last weekend, UAB (6-4-1, 3-1-0) added two league victories over UTEP and Rice to improve their C-USA record to 3-1. In last Sunday's match against Rice, sophomore Kamilah Mustafa netted her team-leading sixth goal of the season to secure the 1-0 win over the Owls. Mustafa ranks fifth in the conference for goals on the season and averages .545 goals per game for the Blazers.
Senior Caroline Kehrer and junior Jamiera Lunsford have also been lethal in UAB's attack, who have each contributed goals to lead the Blazers to wins this season. Lunsford leads the team with 19 shots this season followed by Kehrer with 13.
Defensively, senior goalkeeper Kelsey Daugherty ranks second in C-USA for saves per game at 5.36 and third in total saves and save percentage at 59 and .831.
Leading the charge for North Texas (7-1-1, 2-0) is senior Taylor Torres, who is tops on the team in goals (6) and assists (5), while sophomores Berklee Peters and Aaliyah Nolan both put up impressive two-goal performances in their last match against UTSA.
