BIRMINGHAM – The UAB women's soccer team created a few good chances in front of goal, but two second-half goals in a two-minute span from North Texas saw the home team claim all three points with a 2-0 victory over the Blazers on Sunday afternoon.
UAB's (6-5-1, 3-2-0 C-USA) offense ran through junior Jamiera Lunsford, who finished the game with a team-leading four shots. Lunsford continues to lead the team in shots this season and now has 22 on the year.
"We will regroup and move on," head coach Erica Demers said. "We will learn and build from the good moments we had in this game and prepare for the next match on the road against Charlotte."
Sophomore Regan Kommor provided the Blazers' only shot on goal as part of a two-shot performance, while defender Natalie Presedo also added pair of shots in the loss. Forward Caroline Kehrer produced UAB's only other shot of the afternoon.
Goalkeeper Kelsey Daugherty faced 14 shots against the Mean Green and came up with two saves, including a big save on a penalty kick from Elle Marie Defrain late in the first half.
North Texas (9-1-1, 4-0) received goals from Natalie Newell and Ariel in the victory, while Defrain led the team with four shots, one of which was on target.
UAB kept pace with the dangerous North Texas attack throughout the first half, starting off hot with three shots in the first 10 minutes of play. The Mean Green had a great opportunity to take the lead in the 35th minute of the half when they were awarded a spot kick, but a big save from Daugherty saw the match level at halftime.
North Texas broke the game open at the 58:25 mark of the match when Madeline Guderian found Newell, who scored her first goal of the year to put the home team up 1-0. Less than two minutes later, the Mean Green struck again when Diaz found the back of the net for the first time to double the lead with 30 minutes to play.
The Blazers put a couple of chances together in the final half hour of the match, but did not threaten the Mean Green defense as North Texas held on for the 2-0 victory.
UAB returns to action on Thursday, October 11, when it continues its three-match road trip at Charlotte. Kickoff from Transamerica Field is set for 7 p.m. (CST) and can be seen on CUSA.tv.
