UAB Clashes with Charlotte in Crucial Road Contest

BIRMINGHAM – With only five matches remaining in the 2018 regular season, the UAB women's soccer team looks to return to its winning ways on Thursday at 6 p.m. (CST) when it travels to the East Coast for a showdown with Charlotte.
Coming off a 2-0 loss against a ranked North Texas squad, the Blazers are looking to continue their streak of bouncing back on the road as UAB has yet to lose back-to-back away contests under head coach Erica Demers.
"Our focus is about working to better ourselves in areas that need improvement," Demers said. "We spoke to the team on Tuesday about needing to find more moments in the final third. I think if we can continue to grow and make improvements, success can occur."
The Blazers (6-5-1, 3-2-0 C-USA) gave the Mean Green all they could handle on Sunday afternoon in Denton, but two second-half goals in a two-minute span saw North Texas take all three points.
Jamiera Lunsford continued to pace the UAB offense with four shots against the Mean Green and continues to lead the team with 22 total shots this season. Fellow forward Kamilah Mustafa remains the team leader in goals scored with six on the year, followed by Lunsford (3) and Caroline Kehrer (2).
UAB's defense has been solid throughout conference play, allowing only four goals in five conference matches. Goalkeeper Kelsey Daugherty continues to be a dominant force between the sticks, posting 61 total saves and is coming off a four-save performance against North Texas which included a penalty kick save.
Charlotte (8-5, 4-2 C-USA) currently sits in fourth place in the conference standings, but is coming off two consecutive conference losses, including a heartbreaking 2-1 defeat to Middle Tennessee on the road.
Junior Megan Greene has been a force for the 49ers, leading the team in shots (49), shots on goal (29), points (19), goals (7) and assists (5). Fellow junior Julia Grainda has added five goals of her own on 36 shots.
UAB and Charlotte will meet for the 11th time when they take the field on Thursday evening, with Charlotte leading the all-time series, 8-1-1. The Blazers are looking for their first win over the 49ers since 2003, when they left Charlotte with a 2-1 victory.
