BIRMINGHAM – The UAB men's soccer team scored early and it scored often at the Blazers shutout New Mexico 4-0 on Saturday night at BBVA Compass Field.
UAB (3-6-2, 1-3-1) recorded its first shutout win since Oct. 21, 2017 when the Blazers blanked Florida Atlantic 2-0 in Birmingham.
"Tonight was a great team win against a really good New Mexico team," head coach Mike Getman said. "All season we have battled hard but did not get the results that we thought we deserved. Tonight we battled hard and got the result. This was a big win that gave us a much needed confidence boost."
Aidan O'Hara gave the Blazers a lead it would not relinquish as he found the back of the net in the 25th-minute as Tarnue Tyler fed him a pass that was drilled into the net to give UAB a 1-0 advantage.
Three minutes into the second half, O'Hara found the back of the net for the second time in the contest as DeAndre Robinson's shot deflected off the New Mexico goalie and O'Hara was there to tap it into the goal.
Blake White contributed to the scoring efforts in the 56th minute when he found himself alone with the Lobos keeper on a breakaway as his goal gave UAB a 3-0 lead.
Louis-Etienne Nzonza put the exclamation point on the night as he found the back of the net after a Joseph Buete shot hit the post that Nzonza was able to kick into the net for the fourth and final goal of the night.
O'Hara's second and third goals of the season made him the second Blazer to tally multiple goals in a contest this season. For White and Nzonza, it was the freshmen's second career goals.
The UAB defense played lights out as it allowed just one shot-on-goal, forcing UAB goalie James Teal to only have to make one save.
UAB outshot New Mexico 13-10, marking the seventh time this season that UAB has won the shot battle.
UAB wraps up the short homestand on Wednesday when it welcomes Appalachian State to BBVA Compass Field. Kickoff between the Blazers and Mountaineers is slated for 7 p.m.
Fans can receive admission into every home men's soccer, women's soccer, volleyball, women's basketball, baseball and softball game for the entire 2018-19 season by purchasing a Gold Card. Contact the UAB Ticket Office for more details.
