10/4/2018 11:03:00 AM | Women's Tennis
BIRMINGHAM - The UAB women's tennis team will head to Samford University in for the second time in as many weekends to play in the 2018 Samford Round Robin Tournament.
The Blazers will open play on Friday at 10 a.m. against Memphis and close against Samford at 1.p.m. on Sunday. On Saturday, UAB will face off in a doubles match versus Samford at 10 a.m. and in a singles match verses Samford at 1 p.m.
"We are ready to get back on the match courts again this weekend," head coach Mark Tjia said. "We are looking forward to applying the lessons from last weekend and hopefully improving, particularly in the doubles. It is such a blessing to be able to play nationally ranked teams five minutes away from Southside. The weather should be great, so we hope to see some Blazer fans for great tennis over the next three days."
UAB is returning from a seventeen win performance at the First Samford Hidden Dual where Megan Bertrands and Alexandra Shchipakina were the only two Blazers to win all three of their singles matches.
Sophie Dodds and Sonia Grzywocz earned UAB's first win last Saturday with a 6-2 decision over Samford's Pool and Natalia De Ugarte. The Blazers also won another doubles match on Sunday when Dodds and Grzywocz defeated ASU's Shelby King and Shelby O'Brien, 6-3.
Alexandra Shchipakina and Dominika Hrabalova added the team's other doubles victory over the weekend with a 7-6 decision over Masdevall-Masip and Anita Detlava.
