BIRMINGHAM – The UAB men's soccer team fell 2-0 to Old Dominion on Sunday afternoon at BBVA Compass Field.
The loss snapped the Blazers' four-game unbeaten streak, as UAB fell to 5-7-3 on the season with a 2-4-1 mark in Conference USA play.
"It was a frustrating game," head coach Mike Getman said. "The first goal made a big difference, that is what Old Dominion is good at. Corner kick and throw it up in the air and battle for it. Overall, like every other game, I thought we worked hard and played well, but when you go down two goals to one of the top teams in the league it is tough. I thought the second half I thought we completely controlled the game, but we didn't get a lot of shots on goal. Old Dominion is a really good defensive team and is extremely physical. Overall I thought we created a fair number of chances, we had a lot of possession, but Old Dominion was a good team today."
In the 34th minute, Old Dominion took a lead it would not relinquish as Kostas Mylonas headed in a corner kick from Deniz Dogan to give the Monarchs a 1-0 lead.
Two minutes later, Mylonas netted his second goal of the game as Max Wilschrey and Niko Klosterhalfen combined to feed him a pass in front of the UAB net to put Old Dominion up 2-0.
UAB attempted to tie the game with a corner kick in the 85th minute, but the attempt was deflected by Old Dominion, securing the win for the Monarchs.
UAB entered the match leading C-USA in shots but was outshot in league play for just the third time this season. The Monarchs outshot the Blazers 11-8.
UAB returns to the pitch on Friday, October 26 when it wraps up Conference USA play at South Carolina. Kickoff between the Blazers and Gamecocks is slated for 6 p.m. CST.
Fans can receive admission into every home men's soccer, women's soccer, volleyball, women's basketball, baseball and volleyball game for the entire 2018-19 season for $65 by purchasing a Gold Card. Contact the UAB Ticket Office, (205) 975-UAB1, for more details.
