BIRMINGHAM – After splitting the first two games, the UAB volleyball team looks to close out the final game of a three-game road swing with a win at Middle Tennessee on Friday night.
UAB (11-10, 3-4 C-USA) opened up the road trip with a 3-1 win over WKU, the first win over the Hilltoppers since a five set win on Nov. 17, 1990. It was just the second conference home loss for WKU in over six years.
The Green and Gold dropped the second match of the road trip to Charlotte in straight sets on Sunday.
Middle Tennessee (5-15, 0-7 C-USA) enters Fridya's contest on a four-game losing streak, falling to Rice, WKU, Charlotte and Marshall. The Blue Raiders are led offensively by Bailey Mason who has 193 kills and averages 2.92 kills per set. Taylor Hammill and Sarah Sumida each have over 300 assists with Hammill leading at 370, Sumida has 351 assists. Middle has lost nine matches in straight sets, including three of its last four.
"Middle plays really well on its home court with a scrappy defensive effort, forcing their opponents to earn every point," head coach Amy Pauly said. "I'm looking for our team to go out and compete from the beginning of the match to the end with the same energy. Every practice this week has included some type of competition and our athletes really embraced it and challenged each other. I expect them to carry that same fire and desire onto the court with them this weekend."
UAB has five players with 100+ kills this season, with Abby Carlile leading the team with 213 kills. The sophomore is averaging 3.04 kills per set and is hitting at a .271 clip. Emma Mitchell (160), Victoria Young (143), Emily Rudolph (140) and Alex Kells (122) round out the group.
Keeping the offense in motion, sophomore setter Shelby Holderfield has 740 assists. Holderfield ranks third in Conference USA in assists per set at 10.28. She leads the squad in service aces as well with 19, averaging 0.26 aces per set.
On the defensive end, Emily Martinez leads UAB in digs per set at 2.85, while Brianna Muller leads in total digs with 201. Rudolph and Young are both getting to the net and blocking shots, averaging 0.99 and 0.93 blocks per set, respectively. Rudolph has 70 blocks, while Young checks in with 67.
