UAB Falls to Middle Tennessee in Three Sets

MURFREESBORO, Tenn. – UAB's volleyball team fell on the road at Middle Tennessee in straight sets (22-25, 16-25, 22-25) on Friday night.
Alex Kells led the Blazer offense with nine kills and a .300 hitting percentage against the Blue Raiders, while picking up eight digs and a block on the defensive end. Victoria Young tallied five kills in the match to go along with two service aces and two digs.
Several Blazers recorded four kills on the night, including redshirt freshman Haley Fuller whose four kills set a new career high. Abby Carlile notched 10 digs in the match, topping her previous high five.
First Set: UAB 22, Middle Tennessee 25
Middle Tennessee opened the set on a 9-3 run before a UAB timeout settled things down and allowed the Blazers to chip away at the lead. The Blazers used a 7-3 scoring run to bring the score within two at 11-13 midway through the set and took the lead at 18-17 late.
However, the Blue Raiders closed on an 8-4 run to take the match, 25-22.
Second Set: UAB 16, Middle Tennessee 25
UAB (11-11, 3-5 C-USA) could not find its offensive rhythm in the second and were held to just six kills. Three of Fuller's four kills on the night came during the second set on seven attack attempts.
Middle Tennessee (6-15, 1-7 C-USA) totaled three blocks in the set while attacking at a .188 percentage.
Third Set: UAB 22, Middle Tennessee 25
Both teams rebounded from a sluggish second set offensively with UAB hitting at a .333 clip, while Middle was hitting at .457. Kells earned six kills on six attack attempts in the third with UAB jumping out to an early 7-3 lead.
The Blazers led for much of the final set, but the Blue Raiders kept things close, finishing with a 5-1 scoring run to win it 25-22.
Up Next:
UAB will return to the friendly confines of Bartow Arena on Sunday, October 21 for a match against North Texas. First serve is set for 1 p.m. Fans showing their football tickets from October 20 will get into the match for $1.
