CHOUDRANT, La. - The UAB men's golf team was crowned tournament champion of the Jim Rivers Intercollegiate on Tuesday morning after the final round of action was canceled due to weather.
The Blazers were lifted to the title by two terrific rounds of golf on Monday in which UAB shot identical scores of 278 (-10) and were the leaders in the clubhouse at -20. UAB and No. 10 Georgia battled all day, and the Blazers were able to hold off the Bulldogs who took second place at -18.
Not only did UAB win the team title, but William Walker III won the individual title at nine under par. Walker III (67-68 = 135, -9) shot a five-under 67 in the first round and followed that up with a four-under 68 in the second round to claim top honors.
The team title is UAB's first since winning the Shoal Creek Invitational on Sept. 26, 2015, and this is also Walker's first individual title as a collegiate golfer.
"I am really happy for our guys," said head coach Mike Wilson. "We knew today might get rained out and we were in a tight match with Georgia with three holes to play yesterday. Everyone on the team stepped up with a strong finish. It's nice to see three guys on our team notch career-best finishes as well. I am also extremely proud of William for getting his first individual title."
The Blazers have one fall tournament remaining at the Warrior Princeville Makai Invitational hosted by the University of Hawaii in Princeville, Kaua'i. The three-day tournament is scheduled for Oct. 28-30.
