BIRMINGHAM – The UAB men's soccer team extended its unbeaten streak to four games as it tied Georgia Southern 1-1 on Tuesday night at BBVA Compass Field.
UAB (5-6-3) entered the night winners of three consecutive matches and was 4-1 over its last five games.
"I was a little disappointed that we didn't get the win, but we did keep the unbeaten streak alive," head coach Mike Getman said. "We played against a very good team and our performance, as it has been every week, was very good. We played two days after a very tough conference road match, while Georgia Southern has had eight days of rest. I thought our fitness and depth showed because we were really dominant in the second half when we should have been the ones fading. I was pleased with how hard our guys worked and how many people contributed to a good solid performance."
Georgia Southern took a lead in the 19th minute as Javier Carbonell bounced a ball off the cross bar that fell behind UAB keeper James Teal to give the Eagles a 1-0 lead.
The game remained a one score match, until Blake White fielded a cross from Eder Mora that White sent soaring past the Eagles' goalie to tie the match at 1-1 in the 64th minute.
White got two shots off in the final minutes of overtime, but both shots were unable to reach the back of the net as UAB tied its third game of the season.
The Blazers outshot the Eagles 15-11, including a 2-1 mark in the final period of overtime. Both keepers finished with four saves, but none bigger than Teal as his final save came in the 102nd minute to preserve the tie.
For White it was the freshman's third career goal, while Mora recorded his second assist of the season and third of the junior's career.
UAB returns to Conference USA action on Sunday when it welcomes Old Dominion to BBVA Compass Field as part of the Homecoming double header. The UAB women's soccer team will square off with WKU at 1 p.m., followed by the Blazers and Monarchs at 3:30 p.m. One ticket ensures entry into both contests.
